Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Announces ‘Ananta: Spirit Of Coltrane’ Tribute Album

Composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson has announced ANANTA: Spirit Of Coltrane, an album honoring John Coltrane’s legacy for his 100th birthday. The album’s first single, “Compassion,” featuring Flying Lotus, Immanuel Wilkins, and David Virelles is available now. ANANTA arrives October 30th via Impulse! Records.

On ANANTA, Atwood-Ferguson leads a 21-piece collective of musicians at the top of their craft, including Brandee Younger, Jeff Parker, Flying Lotus, Immanuel Wilkins, Shabaka Hutchings, Azar Lawrence, and Joel Ross. Also featured is an original composition with words by poet Aja Monet. The album is intended to be a celebration of both Coltrane’s musical and spiritual legacy.

Coltrane has inspired Atwood-Ferguson for more than three decades. With ANANTA, he seeks to showcase some of the musician’s greatest works, including “A Love Supreme, Pt. II (Resolution),” “Central Park West,” and “My Favorite Things.” The album found its home at Impulse! Records, known as “the house Trane built” thanks to the influence of their best-selling artist.

Atwood-Ferguson is known for his prolific credits in the music industry. He has released numerous albums, including the orchestral tribute to J Dilla Suite for Ma Dukes, and he has performed live with legends including Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Smokey Robinson, and more.

Much of his work is connected to the LA jazz scene and Flying Lotus’ label Brainfeeder Records. In 2023, he released his debut solo record Les Jardins Mystiques Vol 1 via Brainfeeder. The massive record was cut from 250 hours of music. “I was inspired by Quincy Jones,” he told The Guardian, “who had said that, during the Off the Wall sessions with Michael Jackson, they went through over 800 songs and then settled on the nine final tracks. That approach makes a lot of sense.”
