Frank Zappa’s ‘Freak Out!’ 60th Anniversary Edition Is Out Now
The 105-track Super Deluxe Edition includes restored 1966 mixes, unreleased material and a new Dolby Atmos mix.
A 60th anniversary edition of Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention’s debut double album Freak Out! is out today, September 25, via Zappa Records/UMe. The expanded release is led by a six-disc Super Deluxe Edition spanning 105 tracks, including newly mastered album audio, restored 1966 mixes, live recordings, rehearsals, demos and previously unreleased material.
Originally issued by Verve Records on June 27, 1966, the 15-track double LP was produced by Tom Wilson. Produced by Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers, the anniversary collection includes his 24-bit/192kHz digital transfers and John Polito’s 2026 mastering of the original album. It also presents a rediscovered 1966 pre-master mix and a restored mono version. The pre-master tapes, donated to the Zappa Vault by Erland Sundin, appear to be an MGM reference mix dated April 16, 1966, before Wilson’s final processing. Three songs from the mono album — “Who Are The Brain Police?,” “How Could I Be Such A Fool” and “It Can’t Happen Here” — survive on tape; the remainder was restored by Polito from a high-resolution transfer of an original vinyl copy supplied by Scott Parker.
The archive material also includes Fillmore Auditorium recordings from February 24 and June 24-25, 1966, featuring the only live recordings of the Freak Out!-era Mothers with Elliot Ingber on guitar. Rehearsals likely recorded in 1965 at the group’s Seward Street space in Hollywood appear alongside early demos, mono vocal reference mixes and a three-track late-night jam-session outtake collage. A 26-page booklet adds archival photographs, new essays and a reproduction of Zappa’s original double-sided Freak Out! Hot Spots Map.
On Blu-ray, the core album has been remixed in 24-bit/48kHz Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 by Karma Auger and Erich Gobel at Studio1LA, using the original four-track masters and Vault stereo elements. The disc also includes the 2025 high-resolution stereo remaster and a surround version of “Groupie Bang Bang.” Vinyl editions comprise a 180-gram 5LP box with the pre-master and mono mixes plus bonus material, and a 180-gram 2LP multi-color pressing of the original album. The Super Deluxe Edition is also available digitally, with all 105 tracks offered in high-resolution and standard formats and the 15-track Atmos mix on compatible streaming services.
