The first music video filmed entirely in space was by Canadian Commander Chris Hadfield in May 2012. Hadfield recorded his version of  Space Oddity during his last mission on board the International Space Station. The video shows Hadfield with his guitar floating around inside the ISS with Earth visible through the station’s window. Although the vocals and guitar were recorded on the ISS the other instruments were dropped by Earth-bound artists. The modified lyrics include references to the Soyuz capsule that returned him to Earth – after five months on the ISS as part of Expedition 35 – on 13th May 2013.

By January 2014  the video had been viewed 20 million times prompting Hadfield to tweet – “I am so delighted with the worldwide reaction to science & art, together. David Bowie also gave the video his seal of approval when he tweeted “Hallo Spaceboy…” in response to Hadfield’s video.
