Former Boston Drummer John ‘Sib’ Hashian Dead At 67
John ‘Sib’ Hashian, formerly the drummer with multi-million-selling rock band Boston, died yesterday (22) while on board the Legends of Rock Cruise. He was 67. Hashian’s son Adam said that the cause of his father’s death had yet to be determined.
“It is with deep and profound sadness I share the news of my husband’s, John ‘Sib’ Hashian, the drummer formerly of the band Boston, sudden death,” said Suzanne Hashian, to whom the musician had been married for 38 years.
The cruise left Miami last Saturday and is due to dock in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Featured artists on the voyage include Lou Gramm from Foreigner, David Marks of the Beach Boys, the Grass Roots, Mark Lindsay (formerly of Paul Revere and the Raiders), John Elefante of Kansas and Hashian’s former Boston bandmate Barry Goudreau.
Born in 1949, the Armenian/Italian-American Hashian joined Boston when band leader Tom Scholz hired him to replace original drummer Jim Masdea, whose departure had been requested by their record company. He played drums on their 1976 self-titled debut and the 1978 follow-up Don’t Look Back, both of which were spectacular sales successes. The first album went 17 times platinum in the US alone, and the second seven times platinum.
In later years, he pursued acting projects and played with Sammy Hagar, also recording with Goudreau, one of the original guitarists in Boston, in the band Ernie and the Automatics. He also played live from time to time with fellow Boston members, bassist Fran Sheehan and singer Brad Delp.
