It is Cherry’s first new song since 2015’s Dev Hynes collaboration, He, She, We and it is accompanied by a powerful new video directed by London-based filmmaker Jenn Nkiri, who previously shot the video for Beyonce and Jay-Z’s ‘Apeshit’ and visuals for Kamasi Washington’s Heaven And Earth. You can watch the new video above here.

According to a new interview in Vogue, Neneh Cherry says that ‘Kong’ comes from the “beauty and pain” that comes from living with the cultural diversity of modern society. “It’s a song that came out of this time, where the planet is full of displaced people who have left their loves and homes trying to save lives,” Cherry explains of the references to Europe’s ongoing refugee crisis.

The Swedish-born singer-songwriter, rapper and broadcaster performed with several influential post-punk acts including The Slits and Rip, Rig + Panic during the early years of her career and she has released four solo albums to date. Her most recent was 2014’s Blank Project was also produced by Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes.

Cherry’s much-acclaimed debut, 1989’s Raw Like Sushi peaked at No 3 in the UK and spawned the worldwide hit ‘Buffalo Stance’ and she won two Brit Awards (for Best International Breakthrough and Best International Solo Artist) in 1990. She has also collaborated on a variety of projects with artists as diverse as The The, Pulp, Craig Armstrong, Gorillaz and Youssou N’Dour.

Neneh Cherry has also announced a trio of forthcoming gigs. She plays the following shows:
