ABKCO Records will mark the 60th anniversary of “The Twist” as well as celebrating the performer of the landmark single, Chubby Checker, and its label, Cameo Parkway, with commemorative releases on September 25.
The newly remastered Twist With Chubby Checker album will be available for the first time on vinyl since the 1960s for the occasion. The date observes with the 60th anniversary of “The Twist” hitting No.1 for the first time on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 24, 1960. Twist With Chubby Checker, remastered for digital release, is previewed by the single release today (31) of “The Pony,” to stream and as an instant grat track with pre-orders of the album.
A special 45 rpm 7” vinyl edition of “The Twist,” with two B-sides, will be available, as well as the physical editions of the new and definitive set Dancin’ Party: The Chubby Checker Collection (1960 – 1966), on both CD and LP.
Checker the record-breaker
The retrospective gathers 21 singles by the great entertainer, 17 of them US Top 40 hits and 12 of them top 20. Seven of these made the Top 10 with two going to #1 including “The Twist,” which reached the top twice. It remains the only single of the rock era to reach the US summit twice, in consecutive years.
The album also features tracks from Checker’s folk and blues-influenced released of the 1963-66 period. The rare non-US single “What Do Ya Say!”, which was recorded in London and released only in Europe and Australia in 1963, is included, along with an essay by rock’n’roll and R&B historian John Broven.
The September releases follow the June 19 appearance on ABKCO Records of the digital edition of the Checker compilation, plus You Can’t Sit Down: Cameo Parkway Dance Crazes 1958-1964 and You Got The Power: Cameo Parkway Northern Soul 1964-1967.
