Amazon Studios and Entertainment One have announced they’re working on a forthcoming Mary J Blige documentary, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth and executive produced by Blige and Sean Combs.

The film chronicles the Grammy-winning singer as she preps for the 25th anniversary tour of her breakthrough sophomore album My Life.

“The film provides a personal and never before seen look into the emotional journey of Mary J Blige’s past struggles with poverty, abuse, addiction and heartbreak… This album and its songs directly correspond to the love, motivation, passion, and healing that Mary J. Blige was experiencing then and has continued to experience through her life as an artist and human being,” reads the official synopsis.

“We all know Mary J Blige as the two-time Oscar nominee, Grammy Award winning, multi-hyphenate who has sold over 80 million records,” said Matt Newman, Co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios, in a statement. “But through this documentary, audiences will see a raw and honest side of Mary J Blige opening up about her personal journey of redemption and healing. We are thrilled to share with our worldwide Prime Video customers this exclusive, never-before-seen, inside look into the global legend, Mary J Blige.”

Blige recently celebrated the official 25th anniversary of My Life on 29 November. The multi-platinum R&B star is also releasing a new box set, HERstory Vol. 1, which collects some of her biggest 90s hits alongside rare remixes, and is set for release on 6 December.

This past summer, Blige received a Lifetime Achievement Honor at the 2019 BET Awards, where she performed a career-spanning medley of her songs.

Blige also recently wrapped up her co-headlining ‘Royalty Tour’ with Nas, who she also collaborated with on their recent single, ‘Thriving’, following her previous new song, ‘Know’.

The Academy-Award nominated actress has a number of film projects in the pipeline, including a role as the legendary jazz singer Dinah Washington in the forthcoming Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect.
