Verve Acoustic Sounds Revisits Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Like Someone In Love’
The 1957 album features arrangements conducted by Frank DeVol and four tracks with Stan Getz.
Ella Fitzgerald’s Like Someone in Love is set for a single-LP gatefold reissue in the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series. The 1957 album brought together ballads by a range of songwriters, departing from the single-composer focus of her Songbook recordings.
Made a year into Fitzgerald’s tenure at Verve, the album offered a different format from her earlier work for the label, which had centered on individual writers’ catalogs or sessions with singer and trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Here, the selections range across the Great American Songbook, Broadway, and other repertoire, with balladry providing the connecting thread.
The album draws from two sessions at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Norman Granz produced the recordings, with Frank DeVol conducting. Highlights include “There’s a Lull in My Life,” “More Than You Know,” and “Midnight Sun.” Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz appears on four tracks, including “Midnight Sun,” adding another featured voice alongside Fitzgerald.
The reissue follows the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series’ production specifications, with mastering by Matthew Lutthans from the original analog tapes. Titles in the series are pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and packaged in tip-on gatefold jackets.
