British R&B artist Ella Mai has announced a forthcoming single, “Not Another Love Song.” The track, coming next Friday, October 2, marks the Grammy Award-winning artist’s first new music since her acclaimed 2018 debut, Ella Mai.
The song, explained Mai in a statement, “is about falling in love but not wanting to admit it, so it’s quite vulnerable but still has an edge to it.”
Also on the 2nd, Mai will appear in Rihanna’s star-studded Savage x Fenty Show Vol. 2. The runway show, which premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime, will also include performances by Travis Scott, Rosalia, Lizzo, Mustard, Roddy Ricch, Big Sean, Willow Smith, and more.
Mai’s captivating self-titled debut album was released in 2018, following EPs Time and Change (both 2016) and 2017’s Ready, which featured the singer-songwriter’s Grammy Award-winning hit, “Boo’d Up.” The multi-platinum-selling song put Mai on the map, peaking at No.5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Hot R&B Songs chart (making Mai the first British artist to hit No.1 on the US chart since 1992). A remix, featuring Nicki Minaj and Quavo, soon followed.
The DJ Mustard protégé followed with single “Trip,” off her full-length. The song once again hit No.1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and peaked at No.11 on the Hot 100.
Ella Mai, meanwhile, debuted at No.5 in the US, garnering strong critical acclaim from outlets on both sides of the Atlantic, and establishing Mai as a bonafide R&B star. The NME praised the album as “a stellar collection of R&B jams. Confident, relevant, and full of gorgeous instrumentation, Ella Mai’s debut proves that she is more than worth the hype.”
The album, which featured appearances by John Legend and H.E.R., among others, was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
