Little Steven has shared two songs, ‘Lilyhammer Nocturne (Theme From Lilyhammer)’ and ‘Espresso Martini,’ off his forthcoming score for the Netflix hit series Lilyhammer.

The veteran rocker and actor has always straddled the worlds of music and television and Lilyhammer utilised all of his creative talents, with Van Zandt not only starring in, but co-writing, co-producing and scoring the series from 2012-2014.

Already beloved for his role as Silvio on The Sopranos, Lilyhammer allowed Van Zandt to showcase the full range of his abilities as Frank Tagliano, a New York mobster who flees to Norway under the witness protection program.

While Van Zandt had decades of experience under his belt with both the Asbury Jukes, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and his solo work, the Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer had never scored a show before, and rose to the challenge, traversing the sounds of New York jazz and Norwegian folk music.

To fully capture the sonic diversity explored on the show, the original score is being released as two separate volumes: Lilyhammer The Score – Volume 1: Jazz and Volume 2: Folk, Rock, Rio, Bits And Pieces, both set for release on 12 July via Wicked Cool/UMe.

“I’m really proud of Lilyhammer and the music I created for it,” Van Zandt shared in a statement. “This was especially rewarding because it gave me the chance to finally do a score completely.”

The swinging jazz cut, ‘Lilyhammer Nocturne (Theme From Lilyhammer)’ and the rockin blues number ‘Espresso Martini’, represent the many facets found on the original Lilyhammer score. ‘Lilyhammer Nocturne (Theme From Lilyhammer)’ was the inspiration for the show’s opening theme and sets the tone for the additional 12 tracks on the Jazz volume of the score, that features a mix of jazz standards like ‘All Of Me’ ‘Ring-a-Ding Ding!’ and the Sinatra classic, ‘My Kind Of Town’, along with instrumentals and original songs.

Van Zandt both arranged, produced, and recorded the score at his Renegade Studios in New York and at various studios in Norway during in the midst of filming the acclaimed Netflix series.

To bring the score to life, Van Zandt enlisted the help of Grammy-award-winning pianist, arranger and orchestrator, Lee Musiker and together they assembled the Interstellar Jazz Renegades, a loose collective of some of New York’s top musicians, led by Musiker and orchestrators Raul Agraz, Adam Hochstatter and longtime friend/Asbury Juke/Disciples Of Soul saxophonist Stan Harrison.

“I figured I’ve got some of the most talented musicians in New York City so why waste them on 15 second cues,” Van Zandt explained.

Little Steven continues his world tour to support his new record, Summer of Sorcery. Having just wrapped the European leg of the tour, Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul will head to North America, kicking things off on 28 June in Omaha, NE. The group then heads back to Europe in August for additional dates and returns to the US in September for the second leg of the tour that will culminate at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on 6 November.

Lilyhammer Volumes 1 and 2 are released on 12 July and can be pre-ordered here.
