‘Promising Young Woman’ And ‘Nomadland’ Among Nominees For BAFTA Awards

The awards precede the separate TV awards ceremony on June 6 and will be held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 11 without a live audience due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The nominations for the 74th BAFTAs (British Academy Film Awards) were revealed today, March 9. Outstanding British Film contenders included Promising Young Woman and Rocks, while Hollywood films from Nomadland to The Trial Of The Chicago 7 received nods. Among the nominated directors were Shannon Murphy (Babyteeth), Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Lee Isaac Chung (Minari).

Riz Ahmed was nominated for the Leading Actor gong (Sound Of Metal) while the late Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) also received a nod in the same category.

Vanessa Kirby (Pieces Of A Woman) was nominated for Leading Actress alongside Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and others. EE Rising Star nominee Bukky Bakray was also recognised for in the Leading Actress category for her role in Rocks.

The awards, which precede the separate TV awards ceremony on June 6, will be held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 11 without a live audience due to coronavirus restrictions.

BAFTA has introduced more than 120 changes to its voting, membership and campaigning processes following a seven-month review into lack of diversity.

The changes include the introduction of a new longlist round of voting, the expansion of the Outstanding British Film field to 10 nominations, and increasing all four acting categories and Best Director to six nominees in an attempt to ensure greater diversity.

The EE Rising Star nominees were announced ahead of the nominations today, which are: Bukky Bakray, Conrad Khan, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Morfydd Clark, and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù.
