The final instalment of titles in Verve and Impulse! Records’ Vital Vinyl series, in conjunction with UMe, are released today (23). The new batch of albums complete the celebration of essential jazz LPs from the catalogues of these two great jazz labels.
Both Verve and Impulse! have been making many of their essential albums from the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s available again throughout 2019 as non-limited edition LPs. Each is pressed on high quality 180 gram black vinyl and features the original cover artwork, tracklistings and liner notes.
This final third batch brings the total in the series to 40 albums. It includes Sonny Rollins’ On Impulse!, Archie Shepp’s Fire Music, McCoy Tyner’s Inception, Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook, Gerry Mulligan/Ben Webster’s Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster, Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie’s Bird And Diz and two Charles Mingus albums, The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady and Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus.
The first set of titles in the Vital Vinyl was released in February and included two Billie Holiday LPs, Songs For Distingué Lovers and Body and Soul, as well as Ella Fitzgerald’s Mack The Knife: Ella In Berlin, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s The Composer Of Desafinado Plays, and many more. The second set, in May, offered Oscar Peterson’s We Get Requests as well as his collaboration with Lester Young, The President Plays With The Oscar Peterson Trio, plus Benny Carter’s Further Definitions, among others.
Almost all of the major artists in jazz history are included in the series, also including Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, Ben Webster and Gerry Mulligan. Some of these titles thus become available for the first time in years, and others that are already in print will now be available on a perennial basis.
The third set of titles in the Vital Vinyl series is out now. Pre-order them here.
