The late legend Judy Garland earns a Top 10 spot on Billboard for the first time in 74 years thanks to a new remix by Eric Kupper charting at No.10 on Dance Club Songs.

The last time that Garland appeared in Billboard’s Top 10 was back in 1945, when ‘On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe’ charted.

The song was first released on 22 November as an extended remix from Garland’s iconic 1961 album Judy at Carnegie Hall, which arrived on the heels of the successful Garland biopic, Judy, starring Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock and Michael Gambon.

Following the film’s premiere this past summer, Zellweger’s star turn as the singer and film star has garnered her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama as well as SAG for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

Kupper has remixed and reimagined a number of hits for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, P!nk and Diana Ross, among others but this his is first Top 10 placement as a credited artist.

“My father was a huge Judy Garland fan, and I grew up loving her voice,” Kupper tells Billboard. “To be able to work on one of her recordings, especially this song, is such an honour. Also, the technical challenges involved with remixing this older recording were actually quite fun!”

The remix’s success adds to Eric Kupper’s impressive tally of more than 120 No.1 hits on Billboard’s Dance Club chart, including his history-making three consecutive No.1 remixes in 2018-’19 for Diana Ross’s ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, ‘I’m Coming Out/Upside Down’, and ‘The Boss’.

The remix of ‘The Man That Got Away’ first debuted as the No.1 Breakout track on the dance chart; it then became the Hot Shot Debut at No. 41 and a Power Pick at No. 30. The track then moved from the No.15 to No.10 spot the week of 14 December.

Originally written by Harold Arlen and the lyrics by Ira Gershwin, the song became one of Garland’s definitive hits after she performed the song in her 1954 version of A Star Is Born.
