The pair announced their retirement via the medium of an eight-minute clip titled Epilogue. In the clip, the duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo are walking across a deserted landscape in their iconic robot helmets and racing suits. In the video, the pair bid farewell to each other in a manner that could only have come from the electronic band.

With the wind swirling around them, de Homen-Christo walks ahead of Bangalter, whose pace slows down with each step they take. Noticing his absence, de Homen-Christo returns to Bangalter who reveals a self-destruct control panel on his back. De Homen-Christo accepts and bids him farewell before Bangalter silently walks back in the opposite direction before he explodes.

Daft Punk’s Epilogue ends with the image of one silver and one gold hand making the shape of a triangle over the years 1993-2021 as a setting sun blazes to the strains of their song “Touch” from their final album, 2013’s Random Access Memories.

Famously camera-shy, the band are well-known for their distinctive uniform of Tron legacy-inspired racing outfits complete with chrome helmets. When asked about their outfits in an interview with Rolling Stone, de Homen-Christo said “We’re not performers, we’re not models – it would not be enjoyable for humanity to see our features.”

In response to the news, many musicians and artists took to Twitter to recognize the impact the duo had on the landscape of music today, showing their appreciation. Christine and the Queens wrote “Eternally grateful.”

Since they formed in Paris in 1993, Daft Punk have collaborated with a wide range of international musicians, from The Weeknd to Nile Rodgers. With the latter, they created the 2013 track “Get Lucky” with Pharrell, which went on to become a worldwide hit. Their debut album Homework, released in 1997, is regarded as a landmark in dance music and received gold and platinum certifications.
