Darius Rucker has debuted a song with a particularly personal inspiration as the next emphasis track from Carolyn’s Boy, his new and long-awaited album which is out today (6). “Never Been Over” is a song he co-wrote with John Osborne of Brothers Osborne and Lee Miller, and contains direct references to Rucker’s recent amicable divorce after 20 years of marriage to his wife Beth. The track had its premiere on Garden & Gun.

“Writing that was very cathartic,” the country favorite and sometime Hootie & the Blowfish frontman told G&G of “Never Been Over.” “It was almost like therapy for me. It’s so honest and one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written.” The song contains such lyrics as “We’ve never been splitting up friends, splitting up records/Putting up walls, burning our letters/Grass is greener because there’s something better/Waiting down the line/We’ve been a lot of things, but we’ve never been over.”

In an interview with Taste of Country, he added: “That was the first time I wrote a song about it and it was really – yeah, that was a tough song to write. It’s a tough song to sing. I love it.”

On namechecking his late mother for the album title, and taking her as an ever-present influence, he added: “I still miss her a lot. I still think about her all the time, but back in the ’90s, missing her was pain and ‘I can’t believe my mom’s gone.‘ Now it’s more, I miss her and I’m hoping I become the man she wanted me to be. It’s a little different, a little more mature now.

“When people say I’m a nice guy, that comes straight from my mom. She told me so many times it’s so much easier to be nice than to be an a-hole. She told me that a million times, and I live by that. And my charitable work, straight from my mom. Those are things she taught me as a kid and I still try to do today.”

This weekend, Rucker celebrates the release of the album by headlining the second year of his self-curated Riverfront Revival Music Festival, taking place tomorrow and Sunday (7/8) in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to his set, there are performances by Turnpike Troubadours, Lainey Wilson, Niko Moon, Band of Horses, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, Elvie Shane, Megan Moroney, and many others names. Remaining tickets are here.
