Amy Winehouse’s 2007 ‘Valerie’ Performance Hits YouTube

A previously unreleased live video of Amy Winehouse performing “Valerie” at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 2007 has arrived on YouTube.

The song, which was originally released by the Zutons in 2006, was featured on Mark Ronson’s second studio LP, Version. The cover was an instant hit, peaking at No.2 on the UK Singles Chart. Additionally, it spent 19 consecutive weeks inside the top 20.

Despite its success, Ronson wasn’t so sure the track would be a hit, though Winehouse was insistent that the Zutons song was the cut she wanted to cover. “The thing is, I didn’t even know ‘Valerie’ before Amy played it for me,” Ronson explained to Yahoo Entertainment. “The first time I heard it, I was like, ‘Um, OK.’ I wasn’t particularly… I didn’t get it, you know? Obviously she did, because she’d sung it in the shower and she knew the ins and outs of that song, and she knew what a great song it was.”

It took some convincing for Ronson to understand the vision, but together they turned in an inimitable hit, alongside the Dap-Kings, who provided the instrumentation for the track.

The new performance of “Valerie” on YouTube arrives ahead of the 20th anniversary reissue of Winehouse’s Back to Black, which will hit stores on October 23. Republic/UMe will reissue the album in a series of special formats on Friday, October 23, including a 3LP clear-vinyl edition, 3CD edition, and digital deluxe edition. The collection brings together four unreleased demos, rare B-sides, and a live performance recorded at Paradiso in Amsterdam during the Back To Black tour.

The studio version of “Valerie” is included in the three album sets, with a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge version featured on disc two and a performance of the track from Paradiso in Amsterdam on disc three. Winehouse’s February 8, 2007 performance at Paradiso has never previously been released in full on vinyl or streaming.
