Devon Allman Project Evokes Allman Brothers Band, Derek & Dominos

The Allman Brothers Band, one of the great southern rock bands

Devon Allman, son of the late Gregg Allman and a respected name on the blues-rock circuit in his own right, has formed the new band the Devon Allman Project. They will play their first show in December and tour extensively in 2018, with some notable guests and echoes of Devon’s rich heritage.

After three albums in his own name since 2013, and a decade before that with Honeytribe and Royal Southern Brotherhood, Allman’s debut show with his new outfit will take place on 8 December at the Fillmore in San Francisco. As the Fillmore West, the venue was well-known to the Allman Brothers Band, particularly for the shows they played there in 1970 and ’71, before the historic Fillmore East concerts captured on their definitive live album.

The Devon Allman Project show in San Francisco will offer an impressive list of contributors, including Duane Betts, the son of Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey. Duane will also perform with the new group on their national and international tour, from March to September 2018.

Other guests at the Fillmore will include Bobby Whitlock, the storied Memphis singer-writer best known as a member of Derek and the Dominos, as well as for his work with Delaney & Bonnie and on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. Whitlock now tours with his wife CoCo Carmel. Also taking part will be blues vocalist and writer Samantha Fish, Jimmy Hall (from Wet Willie and elsewhere), Luther and Cody Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars and Peter Levin, formerly of the Gregg Allman Band.

“It’s such an amazing thrill to have Duane joining us for these upcoming dates,” says Devon. “In many ways, it brings us both full circle. We share an incredible legacy, and it’s truly an honour to renew that bond our dads created to a new generation of their admirers and those that have loved the music we’ve made on our own. Having an Allman and a Betts playing together once again will surely make my father smile down at me from above.”

Dickey bets was not a co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band. He was a great guitarist and stepped up after Duane died as more of a leader, but make no mistake, ABB was Duane’s band.
