Having sold over 100 million records worldwide, the iconic Black Sabbath guitarist has forged his place in music history as the “Master of Metal.” Festival director Ema Lea said: “We’re hugely honored to welcome such a legend as Tony Iommi. His music has been massively influential and popular, particularly to people in the north-east. Tony will be talking about his life and times and the importance of the documentary which captures the band’s homecoming final gig.”

Chris Phipps said: “The band took their name from the Boris Karloff 1963 horror classic film Black Sabbath, directed by Mario Bava. They were intrigued by the fact that people actually paid to be frightened — as would their audiences for decades to come!”

The Whitley Bay Film Festival is no stranger rock stars. In 2015, they screened Ken Russell’s Tommy at the Whitley Bay Playhouse, where they were joined by The Who’s singer Roger Daltrey.  Also, this year’s festival is set to screen Led Zeppelin Celebration Day, Dick Carruthers’ movie that captured the Led Zeppelin reunion, one of the most anticipated in history, at London’s O2 Arena in 2012.

The full festival programme, now in its ninth year, will be announced at the start of July. Tickets for the Film Festival rock events, which runs across 18 and 19 August are available to buy online from 4 June on the Whitley Bay Film Festival web site, which also carries further information about the event.
