Beck will bring ‘Tarantula’, from the Roma soundtrack to life for an exclusive debut performance on 4 February on The Late Late Show with James Corden, alongside the film’s Oscar nominated director Alfonso Cuarón.
The one-time-only Roma-inspired musical performance will feature Beck joined by Gustavo Dudamel conducting a 20-piece orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, along with vocalists including Leslie Feist, Natasha Khan, Inara George and Alex Lilly, and musicians Jason Falkner (piano, vocals) and Ilan Rubin (percussion).
Beck’s Late Show performance is the only confirmed television appearance for the Grammy-winning artist, whose most recent album Colors – released by Capitol Records – is nominated in a total of three categories this year: Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Alternative Music Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
‘Tarantula’ features on Music Inspired By The Film Roma, due out on 8 February from Sony. This collection of music inspired by Alfonso Cuarón’s film also features songs from Billie Eilish, El-P, Jessie Rye, Laura Marling, Patti Smith, UNKLE and more, recorded exclusively for this project.
Roma is a 2018 drama film written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who also produced, co-edited and shot the film. A co-production of Mexico and the United States, it stars Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira. Set in 1970 and 1971, the film, which is a semi-autobiographical take on Cuarón’s upbringing in Mexico City, follows the life of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family. The title refers to the Colonia Roma district of the city.
Roma had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on 30 August 2018, where it won the Golden Lion. It began a limited theatrical run in the United States on 21 November 2018, and began streaming on Netflix on 14 December 2018
Beck’s radical re-imagining of ‘Tarantula,’ a 1982 B-Side by 4AD artists Colourbox, replaces the minimalist, synth-heavy groove of the original with an epic arrangement by Beck in collaboration with his father, David Campbell. A riveting Beck vocal performance is the centrepiece, with the backing of a 24-piece ensemble.
