Rising singer-songwriter Conan Gray has shared the music video for his latest single “People Watching” written with pop hitmaker Julia Michaels and Olivia Rodrigo collaborator Dan Nigro. A highly anticipated release, Gray had first teased the track on TikTok in June in a video that has now amassed over 1.2 million likes.
“’People Watching’ is for all my fellow lonely people who wonder what it’s like to be deeply in love,” Gray said of the track in a statement. “I’ve never dated anyone in my entire life, so I’ve spent so many years of my life watching perfect couples sit in cafes and share coffee, whispering sweet nothings to each other. I can’t help but fantasize about what it must be like to feel that emotion.”
“There’s nothing I love more than watching them exist in their little world, where seemingly nobody else exists to them,” he continued. “The song’s lyrics are things I’ve eavesdropped off of times I used to spend people watching at the cafe in college. Studying them living their lives lets me live vicariously through them, in a way.”
The “People Watching” music video, directed by Joe Mischo, brings this image to life as Gray portrays a coffee house employee getting lost in the stories of his customers while making orders, yearning to one day have his own.
“The best place on earth to people watch is the cafe. The perfect couples talking about their mornings, students studying, sweet couples who’ve sat at the same table for decades. It’s wonderful,” Gray said of the video. “My best friend Ashley and I used to joke about the idea of us working at a cafe together, how terrible we’d be at our job because we’d get so distracted staring at people.”
“So for the ‘People Watching’ video, I brought Ashley to LA and thought I’d play the situation out, really show how much of a beautiful disaster it would be if I were to work at a cafe as I always say I should’ve.”
