The four-part series, which takes its title from Connery‘s wife Micheline Roquebrune, now 93, began airing on France 2 on October 9. In it, she recounts the dramas of her romantic life – including her three marriages, and her greatest love Sean – to her granddaughter, journalist Stéphanie Renouvin, who directed the series.

The influence that the French-Moroccan Roquebrune had on her world-famous actor husband during their 50 years together is reflected throughout the series, from the opening line in part one, “Behind every great man, there is a woman. As small as she is…” The pair met at a golf tournament in Morocco in 1970, and were married from 1975 until Connery’s death in 2020.

Some five years ago, Renouvin had begun to record conversations with her grandmother in audio only, with her phone. Last year, the pair agreed to start conducting interviews in front of the camera, for a four-part format that Renouvin feels does justice to its subject. “It works really well, like a series, with twists and turns,” she says, as reported by paudal.com. “And it turns out that my grandmother had a life of twists and turns.

“When I started working on this documentary, I [discovered Roquebrune’s] very romantic life, rich in anecdotes and adventures,” she goes on. “Then, the more I interviewed her, the more I entered into her life and the more I realized that she embodied emancipation, courage, freedom, the fact of knowing how to say no, the will to take the reins of her life.

“She does not realize the richness of her career. It’s all to her credit, I don’t think she’s a pretentious woman. She never asked too many questions about what she is, that’s what makes her interesting.”

Gardot is currently on a European tour, which arrives in Eindhoven in the Netherlands tonight (21). The extensive schedule continues until December 11.
