Nine Inch Nails To Release Remastered Vinyl Editions Of Landmark LPs, New Vinyl EP

November 17, 2017

Nine Inch Nails have released newly remastered, definitive vinyl editions of three of the landmark titles from their back catalogue, in addition to a multi-disc reworking of The Fragile and a brand new EP, Not The Actual Events.

Reissued on vinyl are the Broken EP, The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, along with The Fragile: Deviations 1. The latter title is a limited-edition 4LP deconstruction of The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails mainstays Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, clocking in at 150 minutes in total. This set contains instrumentals, alternate versions and over an hour of never before heard material from the original The Fragile recording sessions. A completely new experience for fans, it’s also a one-time pressing. When it’s gone it’s gone.

Nine Inch Nails’ major label debut for Interscope, Broken was originally issued in 1992 and it replaced the synth-pop leanings of debut album Pretty Hate Machine with a considerably heavier sound that would act as a precursor for the band’s acclaimed second studio album, The Downward Spiral.

Released in March 1994, The Downward Spiral included two of the band’s signature singles, ‘March Of The Pigs’ and ‘Closer’, in addition to the song ‘Hurt’, which was nominated for a Grammy Award and later memorably covered by Johnny Cash just prior to the iconic country singer’s death. Attracting widespread critical acclaim on release, The Downward Spiral debuted at No.2 on the US Billboard 200 and also peaked inside the UK Top 10. It was eventually certified quadruple-Platinum and remains Nine Inch Nails’ biggest-selling album.

Issued as a double-album in September 1999, The Downward Spiral’s long-awaited follow-up, The Fragile, went straight to No.1 on the Billboard 200 and included a number of Nine Inch Nails’ best-known songs, among them ‘The Day The World Went Away’, ‘We’re In This Together’ and ‘Into The Void’. Dealing primarily with personal issues such as angst, depression and drugs, the record was significantly more melodic and rock-oriented than the heavily distorted industrial sounds of The Downward Spiral, and it again yielded double-Platinum sales in the US.

These new, definitive versions of these landmark albums have been meticulously prepared by Trent Reznor and NIN art director John Crawford, and are all available on 180g vinyl with remastered artwork. Broken comes as a 12” with an additional 7”, while The Downward Spiral will be reissued as a 2LP set and The Fragile is a 3LP set. To coincide with these vinyl reissues, Nine Inch Nails will also be releasing a brand new EP, Not The Actual Events, on one-sided, 180g vinyl.

Of these new vinyl editions, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor says: “Digital formats and streaming are great and certainly convenient, but the ideal way I’d hope a listener experience my music is to grab a set of headphones, sit with the vinyl, drop the needle, hold the jacket in your hands looking at the artwork (with your phone turned off) and go on a journey with me.”
