‘Rocketman’, ‘Judy’, ‘Joker’ In The Running For 2020 Oscars Glory

This year’s winners are set to be revealed at the annual Academy Awards ceremony on 9 February.

The 2020 Oscars nominations have been announced via a global live stream, ahead of the winners ceremony on 9 February. The anti-hero smash Joker lead all nominees with 11 nods, followed by Martin Scorsese’s all-star Netflix drama The Irishman and Sam Mendes’ war drama 1917, both with 10. After receiving high praise and racking up $100 million in international box office, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women landed six nods, though Gerwig was not among the best director nominees for the 2020 Oscars, which were once again dominated by all men.

Elton John & Bernie Taupin have a shot at doubling down on their recent Golden Globes win with a nomination for ‘(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again’ from Rocketman, which was nominated alongside Randy Newman’s Toy Story 4 song ‘I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,’ Diane Warren’s, ‘I’m Standing With You’ from Breakthrough, ‘Into the Unknown’ from Frozen II (Robert Lopez & Kristen Anderson-Lopez) and ‘Stand Up,’ from Harriet (Joshuah Brian Campbell & Cynthia Erivo).

Actor and producer John Cho (Star Trek) and actor/writer/producer Issa Rae (Insecure) hosted today’s two-part 2020 Oscars live presentation, which announced the shortlist for categories such as Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Supporting Role and Costume Design before 1:30pm. Categories revealed in the second part of the ceremony included Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Leading Role and Animated Feature Film.

Renée Zellweger (Judy) and Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) were among those being touted as potential Best Actress candidates. The latter, alongside Martin Scorsese mob drama The Irishman, should lead a strong year at the Oscars for streaming platform Netflix.
