Here’s the chance to see the acclaimed jazz pianist Robert Glasper in action with his trio at the famous Capitol Studios. In this clip, the artist from Houston, Texas performs ‘Stella By Starlight,’ the jazz standard from the 1940s written by Victor Young, and previously associated with such great players as Charlie Parker and Stan Getz.
The track is on the current Blue Note album ‘Covered (The Robert Glasper Trio Recorded Live At Capitol Studios),’ captured there last December. It saw the frontman return to the jazz idiom after the crossover R&B success of his ‘Black Radio’ and ‘Black Radio 2’ albums as the Robert Glasper Experiment, both of which won Grammys. The 2012 set won the Best R&B Album trophy, while the 2013 follow-up’s ‘Jesus Children,’ featuring Lalah Hathaway and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, won Best Traditional R&B Performance.
After Trio shows in the US, including a run in June at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club and the Essence Festival in New Orleans earlier this month, the three-piece are now on an extensive European tour. Last night (29), they played the Blue Note Jazz Club in Milan, and now move on to a Friday night show at the Nefertiti Jazz Club in Gothenburg, Sweden.
After further shows in Spain, Holland and France next week, the Glasper Trio arrive in the UK for dates including the Manchester Jazz Festival (August 8) and a three-night engagement at London’s Ronnie Scott’s, from August 12 to 14.
