Big Sean Announces New Album ‘Detroit 2’
The album trailer includes brief snippets of unreleased tracks, as well as behind-the-scenes footage.
Detroit MC Big Sean kicked off his 32nd birthday celebrations today with the announcement of his upcoming fifth solo studio album Detroit 2 via GOOD Music/Def Jam Recordings.
While there’s no official release date, the rapper shared an official album trailer to satiate fans in the meantime. The trailer includes brief snippets of unreleased tracks, as well as behind-the-scenes footage.
In the clip, Big Sean visits iconic spots in his hometown of Detroit and stays busy recording in the studio. Rapper Young Thug also makes a cameo, which almost certainly means he’s involved with the new project.
“Detroit, to me, is home,” he says in the trailer. “But I feel like it’s more than just a city, you know? … It’s a mentality.”

The new album’s release was previously rumoured to coincide with Big Sean’s performance at this year’s Coachella Festival, which was set for 10-12 April before getting postponed to October in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Guess I got a good deadline for the new album now?” the artist tweeted when the line-up was initially announced back in January.
Sean also addressed the Coachella postponement on his recent appearance on Complex’s ‘Hot Ones’ series.
“I was definitely looking forward to Coachella being now. I was very excited for that, (but) I understand, you’ve gotta be safe,” he told host Sean Evans. “I’ve been wiping down my seats on my plane. I’ve been a germaphobe. I’ve been doing that before corona.”
Big Sean released his Detroit mixtape back in September 2012, just a year following his studio debut Finally Famous. The project boasted guest spots from Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Jhené Aiko and Common, among others.
Sean also dropped a number of tracks in 2019 including ‘Overtime’, ‘Single Again’ and ‘Bezerk’, but his last proper solo release was I Decided, back in 2017. That same year, he released the collaborative album Double or Nothing with Metro Boomin.
