Lady Gaga And Ariana Grande Lead MTV VMA Nominations
Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, and Taylor Swift are also up for multiple moon man statues.
MTV announced their Video Music Award nominations for 2020, with Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande leading the pack – each up for nine categories, including multiple co-nominations for “Rain on Me.” Billie Eilish and The Weeknd are close behind with six nods each, while Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Drake are also among this years’ contenders.
Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s chart-topping “Rain On Me,” off Gaga’s Chromatica album, is up for seven awards, including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Collaboration. Grande is also up for Best Collaboration with Justin Bieber for their single “Stuck With U.” Gaga, meanwhile, joins Bieber, DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone, and The Weeknd in the Artist of the Year category.
Other Video of the Year contenders include Billie Eilish’s “Everything I Wanted,” Taylor Swift’s “The Man,” The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” Future’s “Life Is Good” feat. Drake, and Eminem’s collaboration with the late Juice WRLD, “Godzilla.”
A variety of exciting breakout acts are up for Push Best New Artist, including Lewis Capaldi, Doja Cat, and YUNGBLUD, while visuals by (G)I-DLE, BTS, and Tomorrow X Together are among the Best K-Pop Video nominees.
Two new categories reflect this year’s unusual circumstances amid the coronavirus pandemic, when artists were forced to get creative – whether it came to live-streamed performances or shooting music videos while practicing social distancing. These include: Best Music Video From Home (5 Seconds of Summer’s “Wildflower” and Drake’s “Tootsie Slide” are among the nominees) and Best Quarantine Performance, which recognizes the likes of Post Malone for his live-streamed Nirvana tribute and Lady Gaga for her rendition of “Smile” from One World: Together At Home.
The VMAs allow fans to take voting into their own hands – which they can do beginning today via MTV’s VMA homepage. Ballots for all categories except Push Best New Artist are open through August 23, while fans can vote for their favorite new act through August 30.
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards are currently scheduled to take place at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center on Sunday, August 30. Fans can tune in live on MTV at 8:00 pm EST.
