The NASA Perseverance rover landed on Mars today, accompanied by the sound of Youngblud’s cover of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?”. The Perseverance rover is on a mission to collect samples to return for Earth and search for signs of ancient life on the red planet.

“First of all, I am as ready as a rabbit on Easter,” Yungblud said, speaking about soundtracking the landing to BBC’s The One Show. “I love space so I am here for it. I remember my 23-year-old manager rings me on the phone. It was late cos he’s in LA and it must have been midnight cos I’d had a couple of beers, so I was already kind of out there.

“He’s like, ‘Yo, I just got off the phone with NASA’,” he continues. “I’m like, ‘Alright, yeah cool, what’s it about? You leaving me to go be an astronaut? ’He said, ‘No you idiot, it’s about you! If the Mars rover lands successfully, they’re gonna play your cover of your favorite artist of all time, David Bowie, alongside it. I’m just like, ‘Nah man’, that just sounds like someone is just completely off their head telling you a mad story.”

NASA also shared a livestream of the rover’s journey, as employees shared insights on the risks involved with the mission and more. After the rover landed successfully, they played Yungblud’s version of Bowie’s classic song at the end of the clip.

In December, Yungblud released his sophomore album Weird!, which was his first No.1 album in the UK. Yungblud released six singles from the album, including “Strawberry Lipstick,” “Cotton Candy,” “God Save Me, but Don’t Drown Me Out,” and “Acting Like That,” which featured Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker.

Last October, he also launched The Yungblud Podcast, which features “one-on-one conversations with young people about what is going on in the world right now.”

Weird! is out now and can be bought here.
