The teenage pop phenom posted the album artwork to her Instagram, featuring her face blanketed in colorful stickers with the album title spelled out on her tongue. She captioned, “my debut album SOUR out may 21st ahhhhhhhh.”
She also revealed the tracklist, which contains the smash hit and massively popular power ballad “drivers license,” which she released earlier this year. Last month, Rodrigo also performed the hit on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Rodrigo and her producer Dan Nigro recently spoke with Rolling Stone about the making of “deja vu,” which they wrote in a day. “[We] didn’t want to do the safe thing and put out another heartbreak ballad,” Rodrigo said.
“We really wanted to show that I’m a versatile songwriter and a versatile artist. I can make heartbreak songs but I can also make cool alternative pop songs. I didn’t want to be pigeonholed into the ‘heartbreak ballad girl’ thing.”
“It sort of took the pressure off for me of following up ‘drivers license’ since we planned this so far in advance,” Rodrigo added to Heat Radio of “deja vu,” which was selected as a single back in September. “But it’s definitely not like ‘drivers license’ at all, which I’m really happy about. It’s definitely a little different, and sort of weird. I really hope that people like it.”
“Drivers license” debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and broke Spotify’s record for the most song streams in a week. This week, “deja vu” joined its predecessor in the Hot 100, making Rodrigo the first artist to debut her first two singles in the Top 10.
