Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Greatest Hits Album Cover

It’s easy to take Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers for granted. Celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, they’ve left an indelible mark on the rock landscape. The likes of ‘American Girl’ and ‘Don’t Come Around Here No More’ have pervaded our lives for so long, it’s hard to imagine a time when they didn’t exist; touring with Dylan in the 80s, The Heartbreakers helped push him to perform some of his finest live shows of the decade. Several years later, when Tom Petty became part of Traveling Wilburys, alongside Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, he fully cemented his – and, by extension, The Heartbreakers’ – name in Americana legend.

Emerging from the mid-70s rock scene with their self-titled 1976 debut album, Petty and The Heartbreakers now have 16 albums to their name, among them the Top 5 classics Damn The Torpedoes (1979) and Hard Promises (1981), and their most recent, the US chart-topping Hypnotic Eye. The very embodiment of heartland rock, Petty himself has also embarked upon a highly successful solo career, the fruits of which have included deathless classics such as ‘I Won’t Back Down’ and ‘Free Fallin’’.

Initially released in 1993, Greatest Hits collects 19 Heartbreakers and Petty solo classics. The biggest-selling release in The Heartbreakers’ formidable catalogue, it is now set to re-emerge on vinyl on 29 July. A double-disc pressing in a gatefold sleeve, Greatest Hits presents some of the finest moments from one of American rock’s finest talents.
