Built around a driving electro pulse, “denver luna” provides an excellent backdrop for a compelling performance by vocalist Karl Hyde, delivering stream-of-consciousness lyrics ripe with alliteration and imaginative rhymes. As the tune progresses, layers of his voice surmount, building a wall of harmonic movement, all while the steady kick drum keeps things moving.
The full version of “denver luna” arrives one month after Underworld shared an acapella rendition of the tune, which offered an insight into the intricate composition and processing of Hyde’s vocals. Now, on the full version, the breadth of the dynamics has expanded, with shimmering hi-hats and the anchoring bottom end elevating the vocal climaxes.
This past April, Underworld shared their first new music of 2023, a single called “and the colour red,” after debuting it live alongside “denver luna” and the yet-to-be-released songs, “Gene Pool” and “Strawberry Hotel.” However, at the time of writing, no information has been shared regarding the possibility of a new album from Karl Hyde and Rick Smith.
Underworld’s most recent full-length release, DRIFT Series 1, dropped in 2019 and was the culmination of a year-long project in which the duo shared new music weekly.
Meanwhile, Underworld are set to appear in Miami and Mexico City before the end of 2023. Then, in March 2024, they’ll play four nights in a row in Amsterdam. Visit the band’s official website for further information on all Underworld’s upcoming dates.
