Chess Legacy Of Muddy Waters To Be Marked With ‘Can’t Be Satisfied’

Published on

The unparalleled career of Muddy Waters is to be observed with a new 2CD, 40-track retrospective of his entire career with Chess Records, Can’t Be Satisfied, on 16 March.

The Universal/Chess release recognises all of the key markers in the Chess recording catalogue of the peerless bluesman, starting in 1947 with the single ‘Gypsy Woman.’ As it moves through the next three decades, the retrospective documents Waters’ vital role in creating the new sound of electric blues that became, and continues to be, a huge influence on all who followed.

From the 1950s, with the brilliant blues songwriter-musician Willie Dixon on bass, the album features such landmarks as ‘I’m Ready,’ ‘Mannish Boy,’ ‘Sugar Sweet,’ ‘I Got My Mojo Working’ and ‘You Shook Me.’ The 1960s highlights include tracks from Muddy’s Electric Mud and After The Rain albums as well as the double LP Fathers And Sons. Waters’ biggest-selling album for Chess, that included guest appearances by the likes of Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn.

From Muddy’s 1970s output, there are selections originating on such albums as 1971’s Live at Mr. Kelly’s and the famed The London Muddy Waters Sessions, which featured such British devotees as Steve Winwood, Rory Gallagher, Ric Grech and Mitch Mitchell. From the twilight of his Chess years come tracks from Can’t Get No Grindin’ and the Grammy-winning Muddy Waters’ Woodstock Album. He departed the company in 1976.

Can’t Be Satisfied arrives complete with a comprehensive booklet featuring authorative notes, as well as unseen photos from the Chess vaults.
