If anyone can take an ABBA song to even greater theatrical heights, it’s Cher. The diva appears alongside actor Andy Garcia on a new rendition of ABBA’s iconic hit ‘Fernando’ off the forthcoming soundtrack to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, due 13 July.

As anticipation builds for the film’s release on 20 July, this is the third track shared off the soundtrack, following versions of ‘Waterloo’ (sung by Hugh Skinner and Lily James) and ‘When I Kissed the Teacher’ (James, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Alexa Davies and Celia Imrie).

The new version captures the patriotic themes of the song, featuring a grand instrumental intro with flutes and marching drums before the iconic chorus kicks in.

The stirring duet does justice to the original song, sung by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad off ABBA’s 1976 album Arrival, which marked the group’s first non-album single. While not originally an ABBA song,‘Fernando’ written for Lyngstad and appeared on her 1975 solo album, Frida ensam.

While the sequel to the smash film features the ensemble Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper and Julie Walters all reprising their original roles, the addition of Cher and Andy Garcia was a welcome surprise for fans of the franchise.

Cher made her first appearance in the trailer, playing Amanda Seyfried’s grandmother Ruby Sheridan who crashes the party, while Garcia plays a character only known as Fernando. The new film will focus on Steep’s younger self (played by Lily James) and tell the story of how she met her three suitors Sam, Bill and Harry. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is produced by Judy Craymer, who also produced the original film and created the Mamma Mia stage musical. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again will hit theatres on 20 July.

Actually, the lead vocalist on the original English version of Fernando is Anni-Frid, with Agnetha joining in on harmonies after the first verse.
