Georgie Fame Still Shaking On New Box Set
An elegant new musical document of the seminal early work of British rhythm and blues figurehead Georgie Fame has just been released by Universal Music Catalogue. The Whole World’s Shaking: The Complete Recordings 1963-66 is a five-disc CD box set featuring expanded versions of his first four albums, as well as a disc of rarities.
The set begins at the fabled London venue at which Fame made his name, Soho’s Flamingo Club, with an expanded version of Rhythm And Blues At The Flamingo. Recorded there In September 1963 and released the following January, it sounds as fresh and live as ever, even down to the compere urging the audience to partake of the venue’s hot dogs and Coca-Cola.
Fame and his Blue Flames give a masterclass in jazzy, bluebeat-influenced R&B as they cover the likes of James Brown’s ‘Night Train’ and the Miracles’ ‘Shop Around.’ The expanded version also includes many BBC World Service session recordings and tracks recorded live at the Blue Moon Club in the US.
The set includes the 1964 LP that gave Georgie his UK album chart debut, Fame At Last, which now expands from 12 to 21 tracks, with the inclusion of his No. 1 single ‘Yeh Yeh’ among many others. The subsequent albums Sweet Thing and Sound Venture also include many bonus tracks, the latter now featuring his second UK No. 1 single ‘Get Away.’
Finally, there’s Bend A Little: Demos, Rarities, B-Sides And Outtakes, a 20-track collection (18 of them previously unreleased) from the period, which has been compiled after a worldwide search of tape archives. Veteran journalist and author Chris Welch contributes new liner notes, and the inner booklet has many previously unseen photos.
