Atlanta lyricist and Shady Records signee GRIP is back with an acrobatic verbal assault on his new single, “Dirty Work.” He offers the opposition threats and glowering flexes via intricate lines brimming with rewind-worthy wordplay.

Backed by eerie strings and quaking percussion, GRIP steps on necks from the jump. “2 Teks to do a duet I’ll let ’em hum a melody/ Dis ring a misdemeanor but da other one a felony,” he spits on “Dirty Work,” bouncing between words with rhythm and finesse. “Won’t say the s__t to me but I can sense a ton of jealousy.” By the second verse, GRIP is stacking internal rhymes and double entendres in double-time as his words spill past the margins. He pushes past rivals in Atlanta, and everywhere else on the map, with each line.

“Dirty Work” begins where the rising MC’s Shady Records debut, I Died for This!?, left off. An incredible display of his verbal dexterity, mental acuity, and often hilarious personality, the single reminds listeners why Pitchfork called I Died for This!? “urgent and thrilling.” The Atlanta native reminds us not all good stories have happy endings as he navigates his life through two acts on the concept album: the bouts of uncertainty in life and the joys that break apart the doubt.

Speaking with Pigeons and Planes, GRIP shared his intentions on pulling back the proverbial rap curtain. “It’s all about GRIP, GRIP, GRIP. I remember when Snubnose dropped and I wasn’t even on the cover of the project,” he said. “People were like, “Yeah, but who is GRIP?” So I wanted to give them a little bit of that. And they view it on this huge platform so they know what they’re getting, they know who they’re getting.”

Juggling terror and comedy in his razor-sharp flows, GRIP’s leading the next generation of insightful storytellers. “Dirty Work” is the opening sentence, and it spells doom for everyone but GRIP.
