Foo Fighters have unveiled their latest cover performance as they introduced their rendition of the Bee Gees’ 1976 track “You Should Be Dancing” on Jo Whiley’s Sofa Sessions on BBC Radio 2.

“We started recording the instrumental track, and then I thought, ‘Okay, well I’m gonna go out and sing it’ and let me tell you: I have never, ever in my life sung like that,” frontman Dave Grohl said. “But it was the easiest song I have ever sung in my entire life. I sang the song, and it was like six minutes and I was done. I should have been singing like this for the last 25 years.”

The decision to cover the No. 1 track from Children of the World, which was most notably featured on the Saturday Night Fever film soundtrack, was inspired by the acclaimed Bee Gees documentary How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

The documentary premiered on HBO Max and in theaters on December 12 and was directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Frank Marshall. Spanning the group’s decades-long career, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart features interviews with remaining member Barry Gibb and charts through the formation and expansive rise of the Bee Gees.

“This is a story of how three brothers with paramount musical gifts created music that touched the collective unconscious across five continents for five decades straight,” said Nigel Sinclair, one of the film’s producers. “It is brotherhood and family, creativity, entertainment, joy, and tragedy.”

One of the most successful bands in history, the Bee Gees are estimated to have sold over 220 million records since their formation in 1958. The three brothers, Barry, Robin, and Maurice, created a catalog of music over a dozen albums deep that shifted and deeply influenced modern music.
