Verve to Reissue Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan’s First-Ever Joint Recording
Made in 1957 with Lou Levy, Ray Brown, and Stan Levely, ‘Getz Meets Mulligan’ marks the only time the pair recorded in a quintet format.

A landmark collaborative record from saxophonists Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan is getting a hi-fi, vinyl reissue via Verve’s Acoustic Sounds series.
Recorded in 1957, Getz Meets Mulligan marked the first time the duo played primary horns together. Switching up their standard specialties for the album’s first three tracks (“Let’s Fall in Love,” “Anything Goes,” and “Too Close for Comfort”), Getz took on baritone sax, while Mulligan played tenor. They were accompanied by Lou Levy on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Stan Levey on drums—the six-track album would end up being the only instance Getz and Mulligan recorded in a quintet format. The new reissue is due out on October 24th, 2025.
Getz and Mulligan were both key figures in the cool jazz movement, a post-WWII strain of the genre inspired by bebop and big band music. While Mulligan was lauded for his collaborations with Chet Baker and standards like “Walkin’ Shoes” and “Five Brothers,” Getz is credited with popularizing bossa nova music in the United States, in part through the 1964 hit “The Girl From Ipanema.”
Dedicated to reissuing classic jazz recordings, Verve’s Acoustic Sounds series also features records from John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Nina Simone and many more. Each release is mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from original analog tapes, and supervised by Chad Kassem, Acoustic Sounds’ CEO. Both Getz and Mulligan have also previously been featured in the series. Getz’s Sweet Rain and Getz Au Go Go (a recording of two 1964 performances at Greenwich Village’s Café Au Go Go), and Mulligan’s Night Lights are among the other records available.
