INXS have released a new version of their classic track, ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, featuring additional vocals and lyrics by French superstar Mylène Farmer. You can check it out below.
This new version of ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ is the third track to be taken from Mystify – A Musical Journey With Michael Hutchence. The original track started life as a 1960s’ R&B style song but co-writer Andrew Farriss knew that it was special right away.
“The eventual lyric that [Michael] wrote was truly inspired. Straight from the heart. I know how much that lyric meant to him. It was a personal love lyric very much in the moment for him” Farris says of his writing partner and friend, Michael Hutchence.
It seems unimaginable now, but initially the band’s US record label was very lukewarm on the Kick album, but it was a message that the band’s then manager Chris M. Murphy received from Europe that convinced him that they were on the right track. “I got a call from my product manager in France,” Murphy said. “He wanted to tell me that the band were geniuses, and that ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ will be one of the biggest singles he’d ever heard and all the other tracks were brilliant. That gave me the spirit.”
Over the years since its initial release in 1987, ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ has taken on a life of its own being covered by the likes of Courtney Barnett, Carrie Underwood, Tom Jones ft Natalie Imbruglia, Paloma Faith, Joe Cocker and many more.
This version co-produced by INXS drummer Jon Farriss features the inimitable vocals of French music legend Mylène Farmer who had always been a fan of the song. She says of the song, “Never Tear Us Apart’ has always been a must-have song for me, and I was very touched when I was asked to join the INXS tribute”.
Mystify – A Musical Journey With Michael Hutchence is the creation of long-time INXS manager Chris M. Murphy, who, working with his old friend Mark Edwards, worked to produce something more than just a collection of ‘greatest hits’. As the name suggests, the listener goes on a journey where rare, unreleased tracks mix with snippets of dialogue, massive INXS hits and hidden gems from both Hutchenece and the band’s back catalogues. The album is divided up into four sections; Side A, Side B, Side C and Side D all of which mix into each other giving the listener a more profound dreamlike experience.
The album is available on clear double vinyl, black vinyl, CD, digital and a retro cassette, which is available for pre-order now. INXS have a long history with cassettes; one of their rarest releases is the six different cassette versions of the 1985 remix package ‘Dekadance’. All six together are now virtually impossible to find.
“Mystify – A Musical Journey with Michael Hutchence could not come at a better time for the band as Murphy says, “We are entering an exciting period of rediscovery of their (INXS) legacy and a reassessment of their place in music history.”
