Ice Cream Man is Master P’s fifth studio album, released on No Limit and Priority Records in August of 1996. It followed 1995’s 99 Ways to Die, and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart and No. 26 on the Billboard 200. The album, which featured production influenced by Master P’s childhood roots in New Orleans and California, marked a major milestone for both Master P and No Limit Records. Seven years after No Limit officially transformed from a store to a label in 1990, Master P and No Limit celebrated their first RIAA platinum-certified record. Ice Cream Man features collaborations with Big Ed, Silkk The Shocker, Mia X, and more.

Master P’s subsequent sixth studio album, Ghetto D, dropped via No Limit Records and Priority Records in September of 1997. It quickly staked a claim to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Album. By this time, No Limit had become an underground mini-empire, and Ghetto D sold more than 250,000 copies in its second week of release alone. The album, which would go on to become 3x RIAA platinum-certified, featured three singles—“I Miss My Homies,” “Make ‘Em Say Ugh!,” and “Burbons And Lacs.” Ghetto D also included production by Master P’s Beats By The Pound collective and guest verses from familiar No Limit faces like Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, and Pimp C. The latter two, Master P’s brothers, also collaborated with him in the supergroup Tru, which had multiple albums reach the Top 10 on the R&B album charts.
