Glen Campbell has received a posthumous ACM (Academy of Country Music) Award nomination for his duet with Willie Nelson on Willie’s composition ‘Funny How Time Slips Away.’

The recording, taken from Campbell’s farewell album Adiós and produced by Carl Jackson, is shortlisted for Vocal Event of the Year at the 53rd annual awards, which take place on 15 April. This follows the duet’s success at the 2017 CMA (Country Music Association) Awards, where it won for Musical Event of the Year.

If victorious, the song would represent Glen’s 12th ACM Award, a total which includes the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award and the Career Achievement Award, which he won in 2015.

Nelson wrote ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ in 1961, when it became a top 30 country hit for Billy Walker while Jimmy Elledge scored a similar-sized pop hit with it on the Hot 100. Joe Hinton turned it into a major pop success in 1964, and it was subsequently covered countless times, including by Elvis Presley, Al Green, Bryan Ferry and a duet by B.B. King and Bobby Bland.

Campbell and Nelson’s version was hailed by Rolling Stone on release as “a marvellous, albeit heartbreaking, tribute to their enduring love and respect for one another.” It took on even greater poignancy after Campbell’s death from Alzheimer’s disease in August 2017.

Glen’s daughter Ashley Campbell commented: “I’m so proud of my dad and so glad his music is still being enjoyed and recognized in the music community. He always put his heart and soul into every song he ever sang.”

The success of the song was mirrored by that of the Adiós album as a whole, which became his 16th top 40 entry on the pop album chart and 19th top ten country LP. Adiós was also hugely popular in the UK, where it reached No. 2 and was later certified silver. It spent 19 weeks on the charts there, more than any Campbell album since the 1970s.
