To mark the 20th anniversary of his career-making record, The Slim Shady LP, Eminem has launched exclusive merchandise featuring unseen photos and illustrations.
Working with the two artists who provided the iconic artwork for The Slim Shady LP, photographer Danny Hastings and Artist Skam2, the vintage-inspired collection features photographs and illustrations from the Slim Shady era that were featured in the album’s original packaging.
“TBT to ‘99!” the rapper wrote on social media. “YO! PSA – #SSLP20 stuff drops Friday! Went back with @dannyhastings and @skam2official to make an anniversary capsule from the original + unseen Slim Shady LP art.”
The official store also features interviews with the two artists, who recall what it was like to work with Eminem when he was still on the precipice of superstardom.
When asked if he knew how big the album and Em’s career would be, Skam2 answered:
“Not the full scope though, but coming from a skateboarding, punk and metal background, I knew the vibe and attitude of the music was something that wasn’t really done in rap at the time and there would be a lot of kids who he would be a voice for.”
His intuition was right, The Slim Shady LP put Eminem on the map, turning him into one of hip-hop’s heavy hitters and eventually going multi-platinum.
Danny Hastings, who shot The Slim Shady special edition cover talks about what it’s been like working with the hip-hop icon all these years.
“He is one of the most important music artists of the century,” Hastings said. “He put in the work and came on top. When I shot the first album he just showed up with Paul, It think they cabbed it to the studio. Today it’s a big production. Creatively he is always open, he is a lot of fun to work with.”
Hastings has shot over 150 album covers including Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers, Big Pun’s Capital Punishment, Nas’ I am and KRS-One’s Return of the Boom Bap.
