Lana Del Rey’s ‘Summertime Sadness’ Hits 2 Billion Streams On Spotify
The hit was featured on the singer’s major-label debut album, 2012’s ‘Born To Die.’

Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” has reached a massive streaming milestone. The pop singer’s hit has surpassed two billion streams on Spotify.
“Summertime Sadness,” from Del Rey’s 2012 album, Born To Die, is revered as one of her signature songs. The LP, which marked her major-label debut, also featured singles like “Video Games,” “Born To Die,” “Blue Jeans,” “National Anthem,” and “Dark Paradise”.
“Summertime Sadness” is one of the singer’s more melancholic songs (with lyrics like “Got my bad baby by my heavenly side/I know if I go, I’ll die happy tonight”), as it details soaking up the final blissful moments with your lover before the sunny season ends. Its initial release hit the top 10 on various charts across Europe, but its 2013 remix by Cedric Gervais made it an international hit. The French house DJ/producer transformed the tearful tune into a dancefloor anthem. His version hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Del Rey’s biggest single to date.
“After the success of my track ‘Molly,’ a lot of people asked me to remix big artists,” Gervais told Billboard of the remix. “To me, it’s not about the money, so I turned down a lot of people. But Lana Del Rey came in. I didn’t even ask how much money, I just said, please send me the vocals right away and I did the track in one day. I wasn’t thinking if it was going to be a hit or not, I just love and respect the artist that she is.”
Del Rey has previously entered the Spotify Billions Club with “West Coast” from 2014’s Ultraviolence, Born To Die’s “Video Games”, “Young And Beautiful” from 2013’s The Great Gatsby soundtrack, and her guest feature on The Weeknd’s “Stargirl Interlude” from his 2016 Starboy album.
Earlier this summer, the singer embarked on a U.K. and Ireland stadium tour with opening acts London Grammar, BANKS, and Addison Rae. It kicked off on June 23 and wrapped at Wembley Stadium on July 4. Del Rey has also been teasing tracks from her 10th album, The Right Person Will Stay, while on the road. While there’s no set release date as of now, it’ll include “57.5″ (which she premiered at Stagecoach Festival in April), where she sings about kissing country star Morgan Wallen.
