The English rock band’s ‘The Song Is Over’ farewell tour will be kicking off later this month. Things kick off August 16 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, FL and wrap up September 28 in Las Vegas at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Along the way, The Who will rock Boston’s Fenway Park, play a two-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, perform two gigs at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage, and make their triumphant return to New York’s Madison Square Garden, among other gigs.
The North American tour, named after The Who’s 1971 song of the same name, will feature special guests like Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters, Billy Idol, Booker T. Jones, Candlebox, Feist, Joe Bonamassa, Tom Cochrane, ZZ Ward, and the Joe Perry Project, the Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson, and Stone Temple Pilots members Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz.
“Well, all good things must come to an end. It is a poignant time. For me, playing to American audiences and those in Canada has always been incredible. The warmth and engagement of those audiences began back in 1967 with hippies smoking dope, sitting on their blankets, and listening deeply and intensely. Music was everywhere,” Townshend said in a press release when the tour was announced.
On August 22, the band will release Live at the Oval. The album is the first-ever official recording of The Who’s set at “Goodbye Summer: A Rock Concert in aid of Famine Relief for the People of Bangladesh,” which took place at The Oval cricket ground in Kennington, South London on September 18th, 1971. Previously only available as a poor-quality bootleg, the album is available to order in multiple formats, including CD and a limited edition splatter vinyl.
