Cypress Hill and The London Symphony Orchestra Head to Vinyl
The 2024 concert ‘Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall’ began as a joke in a 1996 episode of ‘The Simpsons.
On July 10, 2024, Cypress Hill teamed up with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Troy Miller, to perform a reimagining of their 1993 quadruple-platinum selling album Black Sunday in its entirety. Now, that performance will be accessible as a film and live album to those unable to make the original show.
Black Sunday Live at Royal Albert Hall will be released on multiple physical and digital formats. Physical formats will be DVD+2CD, Blu-ray+2CD, limited edition 2CD, 180g Half-Speed Mastered black vinyl, 180g Half-Speed Mastered Gold colored vinyl (D2C exclusive available for all territories), and cassette. The album is in stores June 6 and is available for pre-order now.
The show featured orchestral arrangements inspired by the original recordings of DJ Muggs, with the hip hop legends performing classics like “I Wanna Get High,” “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That,” and “Insane in the Brain” in addition to tracks from their extensive catalog, including “Dr. Greenthumb,” “How I Could Just Kill a Man,” “(Rock) Superstar,” and more.
The long-awaited show began as a joke in a 1996 episode of The Simpsons which sees the titular family’s patriarch going on tour as a member of a Lollapalooza-style music festival.
“Somebody ordered the London Symphony Orchestra,” remarks a confused backstage crew member. “Possibly while high, Cypress Hill I’m looking in your direction.”
“It’s been something that we’ve talked about for many years since The Simpsons episode first aired,” B-Real told the BBC ahead of the 2024 performance. “So it’s very special for us. And it’s coming off the heels of our 30th anniversary for our Black Sunday album. We’ve played a lot of historical venues throughout our career and stuff like that, but nothing as prestigious as this.”
Cypress Hill have previously shared audio and footage of a rendition of Black Sunday cut “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That” and “Illusions,” initially featured on their 1995 follow-up album Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom.
Cypress Hill, minus an orchestra, are hitting the road this summer. The group will be touching down in North America and Europe, with stops at the Netherlands’ Pinkpop, Long Beach, California’s Cali Vibes 2025, Madrid’s Festival Rio Babel, and more.
