Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi’s hit “Someone You Loved” has surpassed four billion streams on Spotify.

Released in 2018, “Someone You Loved” first appeared on Capaldi’s 2018 EP Breach, and later on his 2019 debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent. It peaked at No. 1 on the UK Singles chart and remained there for seven consecutive weeks—it also marked Capaldi’s first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No. 85 and later ascending to the top of the charts. In March, the track also became Capaldi’s first to surpass one billion views on YouTube.

Capaldi wrote the song with Samuel Romans (AKA RØMANS) and producers Thomas Barnes, Peter Kelleher and Benjamin Kohn. According to Capaldi, the song—which Capaldi wrote as a tribute to his late grandmother— took a total of six months to write. “A lot of people say that ‘the best songs fall into your lap’ and that they’re the easiest ones to write and take the shortest amount of time: I wholeheartedly disagree with that,” he told NME in 2019. “I think my best songs come from me sitting at a piano, bashing my head against a brick wall for hours and hours on end to get one good melody.”

Earlier this year, after releasing a deluxe edition of his most recent record, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, Capaldi temporarily stepped away from live performance due to complications from his Tourette’s syndrome. He made his return to the stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, presenting a surprise set that included the live debut of a new single, “Survive,” which he also co-wrote with RØMANS.

Ahead of Glastonbury, Capaldi also played a run of shows in Scotland in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Week, and in partnership with the health charity CALM. Last month, he also collaborated with the online therapy company BetterHelp to provide 734,000 hours of free virtual therapy to individuals in need.

“Therapy is the reason why I am able to be a musician again,” he shared in a video launching the initiative. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop going to therapy… and giving access to online therapy to my fans who have supported me throughout my journey is so important to me. This is my way of giving back.”
