ABBA’s ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’ Joins Spotify’s Billions Club
This is the pop group’s second song to hit the milestone.
ABBA’s music continues to get the party started. The Swedish pop group’s 1979 single “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” has joined Spotify’s Billions Club, which celebrates songs that have reached more than one billion views on the streaming platform. This is their second song to hit the milestone.
“Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” was originally recorded as a promotional tune for ABBA’s North American and European tours in 1979. It was the sole single from 1979’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2 and was later included in reissues of the group’s sixth studio album, Voulez-Vous.

One of ABBA’s many signature hits, the disco smash topped charts across Europe, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, and Ireland. While “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” wasn’t officially released in the United States and Canada, it still received love on the dancefloor even amid the fading Studio 54 disco club era. Surprisingly, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” wasn’t given a single release in the group’s native Sweden, though it still hit No.16 thanks to sales of import copies.
The hit has formed a legacy thanks to multiple revivals by pop icons and newcomers alike. ABBA tribute group A-Teens released their teen-pop version in 1999, becoming their third top-10 hit in Sweden. Madonna wrote a letter to ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus asking to use “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”—a bold move as ABBA was notorious for refusing to have their work sampled. Their rare approval led to “Hung Up,” Madonna’s lead single from 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, which became one of the biggest hits of her career. In 2018, Cher included the tune on her ABBA covers album, Dancing Queen. New-gen pop singers Ava Max and Rina Sawayama also sampled the song on 2019’s “Torn” and 2022’s “This Hell,” respectively.
The first ABBA song to enter the Spotify Billions Club was 1976’s “Dancing Queen,” the group’s only song to top the U.S. charts. Recently, the pop smash’s official music video surpassed one billion views on YouTube. ABBA also celebrated the 50th anniversary of their 1975 self-titled record with a reissue package, which was released on June 13. The original album included hits like “Mamma Mia,” “SOS,” and “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do.”
