John Coltrane’s ‘The John Coltrane Quartet Plays’ Set For Reissue
The jazz musician’s vinyl re-release will arrive in August.
John Coltrane’s The John Coltrane Quartet Plays is the latest classic jazz album to receive a vinyl reissue through Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series. Originally released in 1965, the record was one of his last releases before his death in 1967. The reissue will be available on August 29.
The album was recorded in just two sessions shortly after the release of 1964’s A Love Supreme. Recorded alongside quartet members McCoy Tyner (piano), Elvin Jones (drums), and Jimmy Garrison (bass), The John Coltrane Quartet Plays captures the sonic transitional period Coltrane was experiencing at the time, where his music became even more experimental and bombastic. The album also features bass players Jimmy Garrison and Art Davis, as Coltrane wanted to play around with multiple bass sounds.
The John Coltrane Quartet Plays includes the tracks “Chim Chim Cheree” and “Brazilia” on Side 1, and “Nature Boy” and “Song Of Praise” on Side 2. The album is the latest in Coltrane’s discography to join the Acoustic Sounds Series, following 1963’s John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman and 1964’s Crescent.
The series, which first launched in 2020, features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl that’s packaged in high-quality tip-on gatefold jackets, replicating the original packaging. The albums will be mastered and cut to lacquer by Matthew Lutthans at the Mastering Lab at Quality Record Pressings. All releases are supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the world’s largest source for audiophile recordings, utilizing the production craft of Quality Record Pressings.
The series includes dozens of iconic jazz albums from legends like Ben Webster, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, Sonny Rollins, Mel Torme, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and more.
