Queen won the Living Legend Award and there were victories for Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and Joe Satriani among others, at last night’s (12) Classic Rock Roll Of Honour in association with Nikon. The ceremony took place at the Roundhouse in Camden, north London and featured appearances by many major names in rock music.

Queen’s award, which comes in the week of the 40th anniversary of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ entering the UK chart for the first time, was presented by Satriani to Brian May. Previous winners of the trophy have included Jeff Beck, Alice Cooper, Jimmy Page, Lemmy Kilmister, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Gregg Allman and ZZ Top.

In the categories voted for by the readers of Classic Rock magazine, Jimmy Page collected Reissue of the Year for Zeppelin’s deluxe catalogue re-releases; Best Film/DVD was Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highway documentary; Iron Maiden’s The Book of Souls was named Album of the Year, collected by frontman Bruce Dickinson, while AC/DC won Band of the Year for their highly successful Rock Or Bust album and world tour.

Other heavyweights to be recognised included Alice Cooper, who won Classic Album for Welcome To My Nightmare; Europe, who took the Comeback award, and Satriani, presented with the Maestro trophy. Noddy Holder, the much-loved former Slade lead singer, won the Showman Award, while the Tommy Vance Inspiration Award (named after the late British broadcaster) was won by Jimi Hendrix and presented to his sister Janie by Lemmy, who was a roadie for Hendrix in his early years.

The Outstanding Contribution title went to Nils Lofgren, honoured for his solo work and as a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band among others. Revered booking agent Rod MacSween won the VIP Award and We Are Harlot took Best New Band, presented by last year’s winners, the Cadillac Three.

The event also saw the announcement of a new partnership to bring the 2016 Classic Rock Roll Of Honour to Tokyo. “Japan is the second largest music market in the world with a strong interest and passion for rock music,” said Billy Anderson, CEO of the magazine’s publishers TeamRock. “There is no better place than Tokyo to launch our presence in Asia.”
